Complete guide to SFDA calorie labeling rules for Saudi restaurant menus. Requirements, exemptions, penalties, and compliance tools.
## SFDA Mandate Overview
The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) has been progressively expanding calorie-display requirements since 2018. The current regulation applies to:
- All food establishments with **three or more branches** (as of 2023 update)
- All items on the menu, including beverages
- Dine-in, takeaway, and delivery menus
## What Must Be Displayed
- Calories per serving in kcal
- Serving size description
- Daily reference intake statement (2,000 kcal/day for adults)
- Information must appear in **Arabic** (English is optional)
## Penalties
SFDA conducts inspections through its field teams and mystery shoppers. Penalties range from warnings to fines of SAR 10,000–50,000 for repeated violations. Severe cases can result in temporary closure.
## How Qaima Helps Saudi Restaurants
Qaima's SFDA compliance mode automatically formats calorie displays to meet the Authority's specifications, including Arabic-primary display, the reference statement in Arabic, and export-ready data for SFDA reporting.
